Learning to read opens the door to every child’s future. How would you like to be the one to unlock that door? You do not need any prior experience or training—just a passion for supporting children as they learn to read! As an integral member of the East Side Elementary School community, you will tutor K-2 students in a one-on-one setting each day with a straightforward curriculum and weekly on-the-job training. This evidence-based approach—developed by Literacy First and refined in collaboration with students, parents, tutors, teachers, and partners—has enabled thousands of students to learn to read since 1994. You could be the key to bringing this new strategy to students here in Chattanooga!

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct 20-30-minute tutoring sessions with K-2nd grade students using Literacy First tutoring curriculum
  • Serve 37.5 hours each week, Monday – Friday from 8:00am-3:00pm
  • Maintain organized and proper documentation of all lesson plans and student data
  • Administer assessments to identify students that qualify for Literacy First tutoring
  • Assess and record students’ progress using weekly progress monitoring probes
  • Attend data meetings with campus staff to communicate student progress
  • Communicate effectively with Literacy First staff, school staff, and teammates
  • Attend pre-service training and ongoing literacy trainings throughout the year

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Interest in literacy, education, community service, educational equity, or non-profit work
  • Desire to work with young students ages 5-8
  • Responsible, professional, motivated
  • Thrives in a structured environment
  • Ability to work cohesively on a team
  • Proficient computer skills, including data entry and email correspondence
  • Ability to speak Spanish or another language preferred
